On November 20th at 7pm at the Westmount Public Library in London, we will be holding a town hall meeting, open to all members of the dive community, to discuss the continuation or dissolution of this dive club. Over the past ten years, we have seen a steady decline in the number of new members, returning members and member participation in events. For this reason, the need for SWODA to continue has been brought into question. Therefore, at this meeting, we will be looking to answer two important questions:
1) Can we continue to attract new members and continue to retain past members?
2) Can/should this club continue operations with this steady decline in participation?
If the answer to either question is no, then we will plan for the permanent shutdown of SWODA as of December 31, 2013. This will mean that we will not be renewing our membership with the Ontario Underwater Council, our online presence will be removed and all SWODA assets will be distributed in accordance with the plan laid out at this meeting.
If the answer to both questions is yes, then we will immediately hold an election for the positions of president, secretary and treasurer, in accordance with SWODA By-Laws, and plan the following months of club operations.
This is your last opportunity to have your voice heard. If you frequently participate in SWODA events and enjoy the activities and people that you have encountered as a member of this club, then I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to attend this meeting and speak up. If you have typically taken an inactive role as a member of SWODA, or if you have not participated as a SWODA member for some time, then this is your chance to get off the sidelines and enact the changes that you want to see happen. If you think that the club should shutdown, then we need your opinion too. Come to this meeting and tell us what you think.
